Rick Alexander’s passion is composing for and playing classical guitar. Rick started composing for guitar in the mid-1990s and has released two CDs of his solo classical guitar pieces, the most recent of which was “Fine Light” in 2013.
He’s also released a CD of his songs “These Places” (2006) via the duo Zanthii Blue.
In recent years Rick has started composing music for ensembles. He’s composed and performed classical guitar duets, trios and quartets. His piece “Jade” was performed by the Victorian Guitar Orchestra in 2018.
Rick has also composed for string quartet and classical guitar. His piece “Storming” was awarded second prize in the 2018 Mat Withers Australian Music Composition Competition and was performed in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne in 2018 by guitarist Matt Withers and string quartet, Acacia Quartet.
“Storming” was recorded by Matt Withers and Acacia Quartet and released on the ABC Classics label. “Storming” has also been recorded by guitarist Ben Dix (Melbourne Guitar Quartet) and Melbourne string quartet Briar String Quartet.

Rick’s arrangement of the Irish folk song “Down by the Salley Gardens” was recorded by Scottish guitarist Matthew McAllister for YouTube in 2020.
Rick enjoys writing both solo pieces and multi-part music. Sheet music for some of his pieces is available on his website and on sheetmusicplus.com. He’s active on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram with performances of his pieces.
Rick is studying classical guitar with Ben Dix and is a member of the Victorian Guitar Orchestra.
He lives in Melbourne, Australia.
