Melbourne-based guitarist Rick Alexander presents Starry Night, a contemplative solo classical guitar piece inspired by The Starry Night.
Serene in its opening and gradually more evocative in its development, the piece moves between stillness and subtle motion, maintaining a restrained and intimate tone throughout.
As Alexander explains:
“The piece begins with a slow melody, inspired by the impressionistic sky in the painting. This melody is then repeated an octave up. The piece then moves to a more vibrant middle section, inspired by imagined life in the village in the painting. Finally, the slower beginning section is repeated, bringing the piece to a gentle close.”
Minimal in form yet expressive in detail, Starry Night sits within a contemplative modern classical language, shaped by nuance, atmosphere, and careful dynamic shifts.
